Black and white always right

The duet of black and white colors is a classic and very powerful one. It is both reserved and saturated, unobtrusive and impactful, but most importantly - universally stylish. Monochrome design is an immaculate solution for any room. Just think about it: you won’t have to worry about matching all those colors and will be able to focus on the geometry of your interior instead. Here are a few tips that will come in handy while ‘monochromizing’ your living space.

Two colors, dozens of options

1. Get inspired by shades of grey

Movie allusions apart, various shades of grey are indispensable for balancing a black and white room. Using them to create transitions between different zones and items, you can achieve a spectacular gradient effect and avoid monotony that can become a problem with a monochrome design.

2. Combine, highlight and repeat

You can come up with endless combinations of monochromatic hues by using them in the right proportions. Soft white and grey shades will make a nice base for your interior while a bolder black color is great for creating highlights. Spread and repeat it across the room using contrasting finish and furniture colors, experiment with decor arrangement or hang a couple of black and white portraits here and there.

3. Go bold with patterns

Furnishing a room in a black and white palette doesn’t mean you only have to use flat colors. Diversify your interior with a few eye-catching monochrome patterns. Whether geometric, floral or abstract, they will be incredibly helpful in distributing visual accents throughout the room and making it more sectional (see below).

4. Emphasize sections of interest

Every room has one or a few sections of interest reflecting its designated activities. In a living room, they may include a TV area with a sofa set, a bookcase with an armchair, a hobby zone etc. Your black and white design will look more dynamic and interesting if you highlight those spots with various decor items - rugs, pillows, lamps, accent tables… Those can be used to create some fascinating contrasts.

5. Play with reflections

A strict monochrome room can be spruced up by using shiny, reflective surfaces like silk, glass and metal. That will create an intriguing play of light adding movement and radiance to your interior. Nightstands with polished steel tops, lamps and sconces with zinc finish, silk ottomans and other stuff of the sort will make your room sparkle, literally.
