How To Make A Cat Figurine On Your Own

Sweet and cozy

Miniature figurines are a popular decor option that can be seen in almost any home. If you want to make your place prettier and cozier without spending a lot of money on redecorating or buying new furniture, a collection of tiny clay sculptures arranged on your night table, mantelpiece or book shelves will do a nice job. Some of them can be bought at souvenir shops or over the internet, but you can also try and make a few yourself following our simple tips. For those who aren’t afraid to get their hands messy, here is a short and easy guide on DIYing miniature cat figurines that will add a distinct mimimi touch to your apartment!

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Take a piece of clay, squish and roll it until it becomes soft and pliable and shape it into a ball.
  2. Pull out the cat’s legs, head and tail. Add a pair of ears and give the tail a little twirl for more plausibility. Keep sculpting until the silhouette resembles a real-life animal.
  3. For the eyes, use two pinches of glow-in-the-dark clay. Imagine how cool it will look with the lights off! Add black pupils and, optionally, lids.
  4. Continue by adding the nose, the mouth and the whiskers that can be made by rolling clay into ‘sausages’ of the needed size or out of thin metal wires.
  5. Focus on your cat’s body language. What do its posture, ear position, tail shape and facial expression tell you? Make small amends to your sculpture until it gains more personality.
  6. Give your figurine a final shape and texture by rubbing it gently to smooth out any inconsistencies and fix any minor flaws.
  7. Put the sculpture on a baking tray, preferably on its side to keep the cat’s paws from crumbling while being baked. Preheat the over to 130 degrees Celsius and place the tray in for 20-30 minutes.
  8. Once the figurine is ready, you can give it some color by using acrylic paints or gluing on some fancy furnishings of your choice.
